Renewal of Membership 2005
The membership fee for 2005 is £100, ie, the same as is was in 2004.
The renewal invoices were posted to members in December and, as last year, the Society is offering a £5 reduction to those who pay before the end of January. Many of you have already taken advantage of this offer and we thank you for your prompt payment!
We urge those of you who have not yet paid to do so as soon as possible please. Late payments mean we have to issue reminders and the Society is keen to avoid the additional expense involved in having to do this. If you did not receive your invoice, or have mislaid it, Admin can email a copy to you.
If you do not intend to renew your membership this year, please let Admin know so that your name can be taken off the membership list.
Lunch at the Brewery
The Society’s annual lunch at the Brewery, Chiswell Street, London will take place at 12.30 for 1pm on Friday, 25th February. A booking form is attached to this newsletter. Bookings can also be made on the Society’s website.
SCL Vice Chairman
Council members were sorry to learn just before Christmas that Vice-Chairman Julie Forsyth would have to give up her SCL duties. Julie and her family have moved to France where she is taking a prolonged ski-ing break pending developments in her husband's career.
Envious Council members paid tribute to Julie's enormous contribution to SCL in two spells of service on Council, especially as Secretary and in organising highly successful social events. Immediate Past Chairman Richard Bayfield has agreed to take on the role of Acting Vice-Chairman until after the AGM in May.
SCL Junior: Cardinal Place
The next Junior Committee site visit will take place on 3rd February 2005 at Cardinal Place, Victoria Street, London. Full details of this spectacular Land Securities project can be found on the the website: www.cardinalplace.co.uk
The site visit will take place in the afternoon (time to be confirmed) and will include a health and safety induction, overview of the project and a walk round the site. Numbers are limited to a maximum of 24 SCL members, so please apply as soon as possible. Places are offered on a first come first served basis, with preference being given to Junior members.
There are still some places available. To book your place, please email Emma Bloomfield emma.bloomfield@fabermaunsell.com Full details will be issued to those with places.
If you wish to know more about SCL Junior, contact Nicholas Gould by email SCL Secretary and Junior Committee chairman.
Call for Papers
The Institution of Civil Engineers is organizing the third in a series of two-day conferences in recognition of the increasing profile of forensic engineering. This international conference will be held in London in November 2005 and we have been asked to inform SCL members that a First Announcement and Call for Papers has been issued.
The conference will focus on diagnosing failures of constructed environments, and the lessons learned from them, to help solve or reduce potential problems. The deadline for submission of papers is 1st February. A full list of topics and further details can be found on the conference website at www.forensicengineering2005.com
National Representatives
The UK Society of Construction Law is looking to expand its membership and broaden its base with like-minded people throughout the world. During January and February 2005, we are seeking volunteers to take on the role of National Representative representing the UKSCL overseas.
The National Representatives will be the contact points for information for visiting SCL members and for those interested in the Society in their countries and will be encouraged to provide short articles for our newsletter and website addressing construction law issues and opportunities within the country which they represent.
The National Representative must be a member of the UKSCL and
be resident within the country which they represent. Virtual Membership
of UKSCL costs £25 joining fee plus £15.00 per annum,
which entitles the member to download papers from the UKSCL website
and receive the regular newsletter. The term of the National Representative
will be one year, although this may be renewed by agreement.
Anyone interested in volunteering to be a National Representative is asked to put forward their CV with a brief synopsis of how they see the role developing within their country. This should be forwarded to Jackie Morris at the address below or emailed to her at admin@scl.org.uk by 1st March 2005.
There will be only one National Representative per country. If more than one member applies, a decision will be made by Council as to whom should be appointed to the post for the first year. Successful appointments will be notified on 15th March 2005.
The UKSCL directory and website will contain the National Representatives contact details and a new section of the website will be developed on a country basis which will include articles as submitted by the National Representative or any other UKSCL member.
2005 Pocket Diary of Events
Enclosed with this newsletter is your copy of the Spring/Summer 2005 Diary of Events. Additional copies of the Diary are available from the Admin office if you wish to distribute them to non member colleagues or clients.
SCL Website
If you have not yet done so, take a look at the new website which has been completely redesigned to make it easier to use. Members can now log in from the homepage, and stay logged in throughout the site until they log out. When you log in you will see a new navigation link to 'Members' which is where you can update your contact details, email subscriptions and data protection info - as well as search for information about other SCL members who have agreed for their data to be accessible to other members on the website (currently over 500 members). In due course, some new facilities will be added for members.
If you have any questions, problems or suggestions, please contact our webmaster, Edward Peters, at Webmaster
Contributions invited from Members
What construction law related topic would you like to see presented as a talk? Please email your suggestions to Jackie Morris on admin@scl.org.uk and we will do our best to organise a talk in your area.
You are also invited to contribute to the newsletter. If you have an item related to construction law that you feel would be of interest to others, then please email text to Jackie Morris at admin@scl.org.uk. A member of Council will thereafter decide whether to include the item in the next newsletter. Please note that we do not accept advertisements or items of a commercial nature.
