The Little Way: A Spirituality of Imperfection

Father Richard shares the insights of St Theresa of Lisieux, which show imperfection as the organising principle of spiritual reality.   Imperfection is the framework inside of which God makes the God self known and leads to union.

The Odyssey: The Further Journey

Why does Father Richard explore this theme from ancient Greek mythology? Richard sees the spiritual genius of myths and describes how they come from a deep river of truth which prophetic, wise people perceive. He explores how these sacred stories contain archetypal meaning that is as fresh to spiritual travelers today as it was 700 years B.C.E.

Homer’s Iliad described the Trojan War and The Odyssey describes Odysseus’ demined effort to return home. This narrative is the center point of meaning.

The Path of Decent

What Richard Rohr calls " the language of decent " is the" theme of themes of the bible."   Call it powerlessness, the bias from the bottom, the way of the cross or vulnerability. human beings have to be taught how to win by losing.

Life itself is a series of necessary losses.   Religion has tended to prefer the way of "ascent" attainment, which is much more to the liking of the human ego, even though it always defeats us.

The Soul, The Natural World and What Is

A webcast teaching
by Richard Rohr, OFM

Richard’s recent contact with the teaching of Bill Plotkin in the mountains of Colorado has re-convinced him of his own Franciscan and creation based spirituality. Could it be true that the deepest patterns of truth “… are there for the mind to see in the things that God has made”? (Romans 1:20). The Cosmic Christ and creation itself are giving us very similar messages, if only we can be taught how to see!

Those are two very different journeys, and we need guides to pass from one o the others.   This talk given at the 2004 Religious Education Congress serves as a perfect intro to the Two Halves of Life.
